IWO JIMA SURVIVORS ASSOCIATION, INC.
A Brief History
The Iwo Jima Survivors Association was formed in 1987 and incorporated in 1988. The first organizational meeting was called in September 1987 and held on October 1st, 1987.
The purpose of the Association, as stated in the by-laws, is to perpetuate the memory of those men who gave their lives at Iwo Jima and perpetuate the history of the Battle, and its strategic importance in our country's victory in the Pacific and World War II.
In accordance with these purposes and goals, during the first year of the Association, a Memorial Fund was established and work began to plan and erect a Memorial Monument. Quarterly business meetings were held and monthly executive meetings were scheduled to administer the Association business.
In the ensuing years, the Association's President, Dr. George Gentile, petitioned the State of Connecticut, Department of Transportation, to name a portion of a new highway, then under construction, The Iwo Jima Memorial Expressway. After months of lobbying, and the required public hearing the petition was approved. The highway was opened and dedicated `The Iwo Jima Memorial Expressway´, on September 30th, 1993. Dr Gentile then requested that the state plant 100 living evergreen trees in the median of the highway -- one for every Connecticut man killed at Iwo Jima, and to have them designated as a Living Iwo Jima Memorial. The request was approved, and the trees were planted by the State of Connecticut.
After months of seeking a site for a monument, a site was obtained adjacent to The Iwo Jima Memorial Expressway from the State of Connecticut. After a three year fund raising effort by members of the Association and overcoming many obstacles, our Iwo Jima Memorial Monument was unveiled and dedicated on February 23, 1995, the Fiftieth Anniversary of the historic flag raising on Iwo Jima. Additionally, this was the date that had been set by Dr. Gentile as the goal at our first reunion in 1988. The monument is in tribute to and in memory of the 6,821 Americans who gave their lives in the historic battle for Iwo Jima.
Since the dedication, the Monument Park has been improved with the addition of an Eternal Flame, and a memorial inscribed brick walkway leading to the Eternal Flame. The flame is kept burning 24 hours a day -- 365 days a year in perpetual remembrance of all those Americans who fought and died in World War II. On Veteran's Day in 1996, it was designated the National Iwo Jima Memorial Monument.
In May 2002, another brick walkway, Walkway of Uncommon Valor, was installed leading to the Chaplain and Medical Corps Monument. Each brick in this walkway has the name and branch of service of Iwo Jima survivors. This differs from the brick walkway leading to the Eternal Flame in that the bricks making up the walkway to the Eternal Flame could be purchased by the general public.
All of the funds and services contributed, $500,000, was raised by the members and their hard work; hundreds of days and thousands of hours soliciting funds, services and material from the public. No local, state or federal funds were requested or received.
We now have more than 500 members nationwide, from almost every state in the Union. Eligibility for membership includes participation in the battle for Iwo Jima during the period from February 15, 1945 to March 31, 1945.
Activities include quarterly business meetings, an annual reunion, an annual V-J Day anniversary picnic and two (2) other social events a year. Life time dues are $75.00. The Iwo Jima Survivors Journal subscription is $10.00 annually.

Iwo Jima (19.2.-16.3.1945)
und Okinawa. |
